More than 30,000 public-school teachers of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) went on strike from January 14 to 22, 2019 for the first time in 30 years. They showed up early under rainy skies to protest low pay, large class sizes, too few nurses and librarians, and the increasing number of charter schools. The strike was authorized by United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) and the general public, including students, showed up in solidarity to flood the streets of downtown Los Angeles.
